Monthly Staggered Registration began 3/1/1961, expire "MAY 62" to
"FEB 63". MAR and APR used only for non-passenger types. 4-letter
months were JUNE, JULY and SEPT. Months assigned according to surname
initial. New registrations since assigned same way. Stickers began
5/1/1962, "MAY 63". System revised 1976, with some shifts; MAR and
JULY dropped (but "MAR 84", "JULY77" seen).
Two-Year Registration began 1/1/1981 for renewals, expire "JAN 82"
for even-model-year vehicles, or "JAN 83" for odd-model-year vehicles.
New registrations since assigned surname-keyed month to expire in
13 to 24 months. Dealers can issue one-month-term sticker on any
new plate, including MAR, APR and JUL. Senior citizens 70 and older
may renew for just one year. Starting 8/1/1998, passenger and
combination expires 2 years from the day of issue.
